How much is the book "The Challenge of The Sea" by Arthur C. Clarke worth nowadays?

How much is the book "The Challenge of The Sea" by Arthur C. Clarke worth nowadays?
When a local private school was clearing out their library shelves (to get new books), they sold their old books and my sister who happened to study there got me a copy of the said book. It was published in 1960 by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. The library did not purchase it by itself but it was rather a donation from The Flemming Foundation, Fort Worth, Texas in 1966. It's 50 years old yet the whole book is still intact, the words and illustrations are clear, as if only several years old, perfect condition though the pages and its corners are turning yellow from age, and there are few writings and library seals. Now, how much do you think is this book worth? (This was literally bought for a penny ($0.01), if converted into Philippine Pesos)

Moving to Texas, schools for Land Surveying?

Moving to Texas, schools for Land Surveying?
I'm moving to Dallas/Fort Worth Texas, and I am wanting to study land surveying. Where are some schools (anywhere) in Texas where I can study surveying? I would prefer the schools to be close to Dallas/Fort Worth, but I really want to become a surveyor, so I'm willing to go just about anywhere in the state. Or somewhere hours away. Thanks!!

Where is a good place to buy a large rock?

Where is a good place to buy a large rock?
I had a plan at my school to create a spirit rock, a rock sitting somewhere at the school with our school colors on it. I'm trying to find a place to buy a large stone. Nothing too giant nor too small. I need to find something that will ship to the school and has to be around the Fort Worth, Texas area. Can anyone help or give me advice or even set me in the right direction? Thanks

Yes, contact a company that sells gravestones or a landscaping firm. There are better ways though both to spend money and promote school spirit. Why don't you get something useful instead like a bench.

Most garden centers sell rock. You buy it by the pound and pay accordingly. If you need a really large one they may deliver for free to the school.

Look around in the yellow pages under the listing "Rocks" you will find many local business's that sell landscaping rocks and boulders. In most cases if you buy a ton or more of rock the delivery will be free.

My son took summer school and is still being retained in the second grade; why?

Hi, my son was retained in the second grade. He passed all of his classes, but failed reading with a 66 average. Summer school was recommended by his teacher and I signed him up and he went this summer. His summer school teacher sent a weekly report card home for me to see his progress and sign, his first week he made a 85, second week 90, third week 81, and the fourth and final week he made a 94. His summer school average was a 87.5. After summer school was over I called his school to see if he had been promoted and the principle said that they didn't receive a folder for him. I waited another two weeks and called again and still no answer to my question. After calling many other times and going to the school, the principle finally got back to me and said that my son would be retained. When I asked him why, he said my son didn't meet the minimum requirements for the year to pass to the third grade. I asked him what was summer school for and he said "Well he just didn't do well enough to be promoted." School starts on Tuesday 8/24/2010 and I don't know what to do. I believe my child will do fine in the third grade if given the chance. Can someone help me? My son was so upset and so was I. He couldn't understand why he worked his butt off and missed going to his grandmother's in east Texas to do what was needed to be promoted to the next grade and he is still retained. We live in Fort Worth, Texas and he goes to Crowley ISD. I appreciate any advice. The summer school packet I signed stated " If a student is needing summer school for promotion, he/she must attend 18 out 20 days. Promotion is then determined by his/her school principle." The problem is that if my son didn't have the opportunity for promotion, then why is is stated. Now I have been told that the school doesn't promote 1st or 2nd graders even if they pass summer school. Do you get the same interpretation that the opportunity for promotion was offered from the statements above? I did my job at home as a single parent of three (from a previous marriage) and made sure his work was correct and turned in on time. Also if he fail due to not taking his class serious, he had his punishment by having to miss most of his summer vacation to attend summer school. For all I know it could be discrimination. The other schools in the same district promote under this program. Why is this the only school that doesn't, and why am I the only parent having problems with no kids promoted.

I would fight the system, and honestly threaten to sue. When my cousin was in first grade, the teacher wanted to hold her back, because she had cancer... Yeah, she didn't get the best grades, but she was totally fine to move on to the next grade. Well, guess what? My aunt hassled the school and they allowed my cousin to enter second grade. It really sucks that they did this to both you and your son. Considering that school starts on Tuesday, they have locked you in a very tight position. Why they chose not to tell you about this sooner, is very irresponsible of them. It's very shameful and pathetic. With the grade your son got in summer school, he is more than qualified to enter the third grade. I wish you the best of luck. I'm really sorry about your situation. :(

i would go to the next level of authority after the principal, the school board. if that doesn't work, go to the next position of authority and so on. you can also file a legal complaint if needed.

Definitely don't let it go, keep hassling the system until they realize their error. Your son is more than qualified to move on to the next grade. Obviously the principal isn't going to do anything, so take it to the next up.

Something's not right here. If he had done worse in summer school, the school's stance would be understandable--but an 87 is excellent. Talk with the dean of the school district. Make some waves. This shouldn't be a problem.

Because you can't instill a proper work ethic in your son [I assume his low grade was due to a failure to actually do the work as opposed to just being not-bright] a class above his ethic level has to suffer? Perhaps you should remedy the problem at home? There is no excuse for a normal boy to be getting such a low score in reading classes. To answer you, you can do nothing. Unless your son is being held back and you think it is due to discrimination on a religious, racial or gender issue; however you do not seem to feel this is true. I notice you didn't say that they actually told you that if he went to summer school and did well that he would be allowed to go to the third grade. Did they? They may have suggested it only so that he didn't get worse over the summer so that he could pass when he came back.

Let him re-peat the 2rd grade, it will make him a better student in the long run. it is better to have him get A's and B's having re-peat of a grade than to think he can handle it in the next grade when he is failing getting F's and D's. It will not kill him to take a grade over.

Texas Christian Univeristy or University of Arkansas?

Texas Christian Univeristy or University of Arkansas?
Which should I attend? I have scholarships worth considerable amounts to both, although TCU is much more expensive that U of A. I'm strongly leaning towards TCU. Undecided on a major, possibly biology. TCU is in Fort Worth, Texas and U of A is in Fayetteville, AR. I am from AR. Tell me which school and why! (I know all I need to know about the schools and have visited multiple times and stayed over night with students at each. Just looking for an outside opinion, this is just for fun.)

I really think yous should go to TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. If you want to go to further your education and you become a resident of Texas, it will cost you so much less money compare to schools in order states. Texas is not a bad place to live. ss

17 yrs old. done with high school 5 lessons away from having a Career Diploma as a Veterinary Assistant?

Okay I'm 17 years old I finished high school early and I'm five lessons away from having a Career Diploma as a Veterinary Assistant. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with any sites I could look at that are looking for people to hire. I know some sites you have to be 18 or older. But really looking for a place to put my skills at test... a place thats willing to train. I'm getting ready to move in with someone and i need a job. Leaving for Colorado for a month- but ill be back in Ft. Worth. after im done visiting family Fort Worth Texas is the area- if anyone could help it would help a lot!!! Thanks.

There are several job search engines that you could check. One of them is called "Where Techs Connect". The Texas Assoc. of Registered Veterinary Technicians website and newsletter also posts job openings specifically in Texas. www.tarvt.org And the TVMA publication "Texas Veterinarian" posts job openings. Another online source for classified listings is www.vspn.org A more direct approach would be to put together a letter of intent and a resume and take it around to all the local veterinary clinics in your area. Then even if they aren't actively advertising now, if they need help in the future they will have your information on hand. May I ask why you went with a "career diploma" which basically doesn't count as anything (won't transfer to colleges, won't allow you to sit for the National Veterinary Technician Exam, not required to work as a veterinary assistant in any state) rather than going ahead with a college degree? It's great tht you want to get an education in the career field of your choice, but I'm curious as to your choice. And where you got this "career diploma" from because I've never heard of it. Where should I move: San Antonio, Fort Worth, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, or Atlanta? Why?

These are the urban areas in which I'm considering law school. Which of these do you prefer, not prefer, and why? If you choose to get even more specific: -You can rank the cities -You can give a little inside info about the cities Given the strength of the particular law schools, the regional markets for lawyers, proximity to other great metro areas, and general friendliness of the people, this is my list so far: 1. Top choice - San Antonio: culture, weather, proximity to Austin 2. Fort Worth: nice city, lower humidity, proximity to Dallas 3. Atlanta: fastest-growing metro in the SE, beautiful area 4. (tie) Oklahoma City, Tulsa: Oklahoma is nice, steadily growing, benefits from proximity to Texas I want to attend school in a much friendlier and warmer climate than my current state of Kentucky. Thank you!

I'd go with San Antone too. I met some women from there and all they could talk about was home and all the stuff they have to do there; good food, great nightlife, cool sports. Ft. Worth has a lot of military so there'll probably be lots of chain stuff but still plenty to do. My dad was stationed there in the early 80's, he liked it, mom hated it, I don't remember it Atlanta has lots of traffic, like all the time. But I agree that Georgia is beautiful. The weather won't be as great as TX. I've been to Tulsa, not impressed. People are nice but that's the only up I see.

I am a native Texan so..... I would say Fort Worth, Atlanta, San Antonio, then Oklahoma City, then Tulsa People in Fort Worth are very friendly, much more so than in Dallas...and the cultural centers are "off the chain"....Are you considering TCU law school (do they have one)? Well SMU in Dallas is more prestigious I think, but you can still use the library in Dallas and the other great libraries Dallas has... Atlanta...so much to say....people are materialistic there (but aren't most people these days) but it is a REAL city...not quite New York, London, or Munich but great.... San Antonio..wow...you want to be close to Austin? I despised Austin and have many many relatives there...great shopping and cultural scene but other than that it sucked like a vacuum... San Antonio is worse....I go for the Riverwalk (but I have seen better all around the world) and Sea World, but that is about it...maybe shopping there and in San Marcos Ah Oklahoma.....again, I am a Texan so well, I am biased......but if you live in Kentucky (beautiful state, I have relatives there too) then you can live in Oklahoma Don't just consider the cities the schools are in but the professors, the reputation, the education you will be receiving, what you want to do after law school, where you can make contacts, become a clerk, etc. Good luck.
